Windowing Tools

 

·         Navigation Arrows –allows the user to pan around the map interface by clicking on the directional arrows.

·         Elevator – allows the user to zoom in/out on the map interface at predetermined scales by clicking on the different levels or using the plus or minus buttons.

·         Zoom In/Out tool_zoomOut.jpgtool_zoomIn.jpg- allows the user to zoom in/out on the map interface.  User has the option to click once on the interface or to click and drag to create a rectangle to determine the new extent of the map.

 

·         Pan tool_pan.jpg- allows the user to pan around the map interface.  User clicks on the map interface and drags the map to a new location.

 

·         Full Extent tool_fullExt.jpg - shows user the full extent of all the map services currently in the viewer.

 

·         Previous/Next Extent tool_prevExt.jpgtool_nextExt.jpg - allows the user to go to a previous/next extent

 

·         Fixed Zoom In/Out cmnd_FixedZoomOut.jpgcmnd_FixedZoomIn.jpg - allows the user to zoom  in/out on the center of the map display

 

·         Zoom In/Zoom out at Point tool_FixedZoomOut.jpgtool_FixedZoomIn.jpg - allows the user to zoom in/out on the map display based on a point they input.

 

·         Zoom to Scale tool_zoomToScale.gif - opens a dialogue that allows the user to zoom to a map scale picked from a dropdown list.

 

·         Zoom to Bookmark tool_zoomToBookmark.gif - opens a dialogue that allows the user to select a bookmarked location on the map display.  Choices available include Avalon, Eastern, Central, Western and Labrador

·         Zoom to Coordinate tool_zoomToCoordinate.gif - opens a window that allows the user to choose a coordinate system and enter xy values for a point.  The map display will zoom to center on that point.

 

·         Zoom to Layer Extent (Tools     Zoom to Layer Extent) – opens a window that allows the user to choose a layer from the available map services and zoom to the extent of that layer.

 

 

·         Overview Map – (View     Overview Map) – opens a map overview panel underneath the table of contents.  This window shows the full extent of the map with a red window indicating the location the map interface is currently zoomed into.

Working with features

 

·         Get Coordinate tool_coord.jpg - This tool opens a window where the user can select a Geographic or Projected Coordinate system for the coordinate values.  The user will then click on the map interface and the coordinate value for the point clicked will be displayed in the window.

·         Identify tool_identify.jpg - Provides the user with a list of the fields and values stored in a table for the feature selected.  To use the identify tool, click on the toolbar button then click on a feature on the map interface.  If a number of features overlap at the point you clicked, you can choose the layer with the information you need by clicking on the arrow at the top of the dialogue.   At the bottom of the dialogue you can chose Add to Results.  This adds the feature to the results panel of the map interface and it can be used to select other features, create tables or reports.

 

 

 

 

·         Draw Graphic – (Click Tools  - Draw Graphic) – this tool allows the user to choose a graphic from a list to be displayed on the map.  Click on the map interface on the location(s) you’d like to add the graphic.  In order to remove the graphic(s), you can either select the ones you’d like deleted individually or you can choose to remove all graphics.

 

 

·         Draw Label – (Click Tools - Draw Label) – this tool allows the user to create a label anywhere on the map.  The user chooses the font, size, and color (a preview of what the label will look like is on the bottom of the dialogue) then can click on the map interface to add the label.  In order to remove the label(s), you can either select the ones you’d like deleted individually or you can choose to remove all labels.

 

            

 

·         Draw Shape (Click Tools - Draw Shape) - this tool allows the user to create a point, line, polygon or rectangle. The user chooses the style (different depending on shape chosen), width, and color (a preview of what the shape will look like is on the bottom of the dialogue) then can click on the map interface to add the shape.  In order to remove the shape(s), you can either select the ones you’d like deleted individually or you can choose to remove all shapes.

 

 

·         Measure (Tools - Measure) - this tool allows the user to measure a point (returns coordinate value), distance of a line or area of a polygon.  Choose the appropriate point, line or polygon on the dialogue and then create the feature on the map interface.  The results of coordinate value, linear distance and area will be displayed on the dialogue.

 

 

·         Magnifier – (Tools - Magnifier) – choosing this tool opens a window that can be placed anywhere on the map interface, acting like a magnifying glass.  The magnification can be changed by using the dropdown at the bottom of the window to select a value between 2x and 10x.

 

·         Spatial Statistics – (Tools - Spatial Statistics) – choosing this tool opens the Spatial Statistics dialogue that works with the identify tool on the Public Water Supplies data.  Click on the identify tool in the toolbar then click on a Water Supply – land cover areas for the water supply will be displayed in the top part of the dialogue (under Areas).  If you click on additional water supplies, the tool calculates the total value of all land cover areas of all the water supplies clicked and displays this information under the Total Areas section.  The information for the most recent water supply selected will be displayed under Areas.

 

 

Selecting Features  

 

·         Select By Attribute – (click Selection - Select By Attribute) – clicking on this tool opens a dialogue that allows the user to select a layer to query.  When an input layer has been selected, the user chooses a field name from the dropdown attribute list, as well as an operation and can input a particular value or can choose one from a list of values (populated when the user clicks on Get Sample Values).  Next, click on Add to Query Expression – this displays the query you’ve created under Query Expression, where you can make modifications to it.  Once the query is finished, you have the option to Query Full Extent (check all the data) or to select the data you want to run the query against using select point, polygon, rectangle, circle, polyline, etc).  The selected features will be highlighted on the map interface and you can view the associated information by clicking on View – results.

·         Select Community – (Selection - Select Community) – choose the community name from the available dropdown list and click find.  The community will be indicated on the map display with

a red pushpin and information on the community will be displayed under the results tab (View – Results)

·         Select Water Supply – (Selection - Select Water Supply) – choose the community that uses the water supply from the available dropdown list and click find.  The water supply will be highlighted on the map display and information on the water supply will be displayed under the results tab (View – Results)

·         Select By Feature Buffer – (Selection - Select By Feature Buffer) – In the dialogue, choose the layer from the map interface you want to find data from, and then enter the buffer you want to create around those features.  Next, choose the layer you want to find out if it intersects with the buffered features and click show intersecting features.  Alternatively, you can select specific features to check using the select by point or rectangle.  For example, in order to find all dams that are within 5 miles of a community, you would choose Dams under Find Data and input a distance of 5 miles.  You would then choose Communities under Intersecting with and click show intersecting features.  The features within the buffer area  will be highlighted on the map display and information on the features will be displayed under the results tab (View – Results).

·         Select By Location- (Selection - Select By Location) – In the dialogue, choose the layer from the map interface you want to select, and then choose a tool to specify your area of interest (select by point, rectangle, polygon, circle, oval, polyline, or line). The selected features  will be highlighted on the map display and information on the features will be displayed under the results tab (View – Results).

·         Select By Multiple Points – (Selection - Select By Multiple Points) – In the dialogue, choose the layer from the map interface you want to select, then click the add new feature button to add multiple points on the map interface.  If you add a point incorrectly, highlight it in the list of points and click delete.  When all the points you want to use to select data have been added, click submit.  The selected features  will be highlighted on the map display and information on the features will be displayed under the results tab (View – Results).

·         Select By Point Buffer – (Selection - Select By Point Buffer) – In the dialogue, choose the layer from the map interface you want to select features from then enter a buffer distance and click on a point on the map interface.  This tool creates the specified buffer distance around the point and selects features from the input layer, highlighting them on the map interface.  In order to see detailed information about the selected features, go to the Results Tab (View – Results).

Working with Results

·         Results (View - Results) – when using the Selection menu, information about selected features is displayed in the Results window.  If water supplies or communities are selected, their information is also passed to the report viewer.  To access functionality within the results window, right click on a feature to access the context menu.  This gives you the option of rerunning a task, removing the feature from the results window or creating a table to display information attached to the feature.  If there are more than one set of results in the window, an option to clear all will be displayed at the top of the window.

 

 

Printing a Map

·         Print (Map - Print) – This tool opens a separate page with a map showing the extent of the data currently in your viewer window.  The user can give the map a title, choose a template as well as map width and resolution.  The user can then choose File – Print in order to print the map.

 

               

Exporting Data

·         Export Image (Map - Export Image) – this tool opens a separate window that displays the image created with the output type and width specified in the dialogue window.  The image can then be downloaded and stored in a location specified by the user.

 

 

·         Export to CSV (table tab) – Selected features (results) can be used to create a table within the table window.  The table can then be exported to csv by clicking on the button at the top of the window.

 

 

 

Viewing Reports

 

·         Reports (View - Reports) – opens page that allows you to choose global reports, feature reports or to return to the map.  Global reports provide information for all features – there are two global reports available, a listing of all boil advisories within the province and a list of Public Water Supplies.

Feature reports work with selected communities or water supplies listed in the results tab of the map viewer.

Choose a report from the available dropdown lists to view it.  A toolbar at the top of the report window allows the user to print the report or export data used in the report.  The user can also use the arrows to move through the pages of the report or to zoom in/out on the report page.  There is also a find tool that allows the user to enter text you want to find in the report (for example, a particular community in the global reports)

Customizing the Viewer

 

·         Set Map Refresh Rate (Preferences - Set Map Refresh Rate) – The user can choose to refresh the map data every 5 seconds to every 6 minutes if the data is constantly updated.  Otherwise the refresh rate can be disabled and the map will be refreshed whenever you enter the viewer.

 

 

·         Set Selection Symbols – (Preferences - Set Selection Symbols) – Allows the user to set the appearance of selected features on the map interface.  Choose your preferences of type, width, fill color, outline color and transparency for point, line and polygon symbols from the dropdown lists and click save user preferences at the bottom of the dialogue.

 

 

·         Accordian Menu (View - Accordian Menu) – This tool resets the panels (table of contents, map, etc) of the viewer to their default in the event that some of them have been closed or resized.

 

·         Add Map Resource (Map - Add Map Resource) – This tool allows the user to add other map resources to the viewer.  Choose the type of server connection from the dropdown list provided and enter the applicable URL to the resource and click Get Services.  A list of available services from the source provided will be displayed under Services.  Highlight the service you’d like added to the viewer and click Add service to map.  The new map resource will now be displayed in your viewer.

 

 

·         Manage Map Resources (Map - Manage Map resources) - this dialogue allows the user to change the draw order of map resources in the viewer, change transparency of a service, remove services or choose the coordinate system/extent of all services currently in the viewer.  Highlight the service you’d like to modify under existing services.  Clicking on the up/down arrows next to the list will move the service up/down in the table of contents (changing the draw order).  Clicking on the x will remove the service from the viewer.  In order to change the service properties of opacity or the data frame its currently in, change the options in the dropdown lists provided and click Update Service.  To use the coordinate system/extent of a particular service for all of the map services in the viewer, choose the service from the dropdown list and click Update Map.
